It was so good to be back at Poplar Head farmers market, seeing old friends and making new ones! Thankfully the rain held off, and it was pretty pleasant outside. We’re so sorry about the parking issues – there was a graduation ceremony at the Civic Center. Hopefully something like that won’t happen again! PS – just a reminder, it IS hot outside. If the farmers market is your first stop of the day, you might want to bring a cooler for all of your precious treasures. Fresh herbs left in a hot car while you make a few more stops is a terrible sight

Split Blueberries

Well, the farm made it through the storm relatively undamaged. Strong winds, and heavy rains, but nothing too severe. The blueberries tried to drink in every last drop, as usual,…

At last week’s farmer’s market, I had a lot of people asking how to cut up a patty pan squash. Here’s how I do it. šŸ˜€ The thickness of the slices depends on how you want to cook it. Half inch slices, oiled and seasoned with salt/pepper, then baked in the oven are great. (A little parmesan sprinkled on top is even better.) …OR… Small cubes pan fried in butter or bacon grease are awesome! Don’t be scared to try these beauties the next time you see them. Remember, it’s just another tasty summer squash! Check out our website atĀ www.avalonfarms.usĀ for where to get them. ā€‹ #sustainablemarketfarmingā€‹

Being a sustainable farm means integrating different parts of the farm together in a way that makes the best use of everything we have. Here Sally and Princess are eating some of the older sugar snap peas vines that we cleaned out to make room for the next crop planned for that space. There’s still a few pea pods on the vines, and there is always a race to find them before the other goats. Humans aren’t the only ones who love sugar snap peas! Of course, we don’t usually follow up with the rest of the plant for dessert. šŸ¤£
