We have a freeze warning for tonight. 29 degrees for several hours. New transplants started in greenhouse will be fine on the heat table, and onions, garlic, leeks and sugar snap peas can take that just fine out in the fields.

The potatoes, on the other hand, might get bit hard and delayed or even killed. Time to do things the old fashioned way

Mulching with hay has been around a long time.

We took one of our old “spoiled” bales of hay and spread it over the top of the potato rows. It will protect the plants from the low temps, and will also act as a mulch for weeds and organic matter which will get incorporated into the soil at potato harvest. It’s a win-win-win situation.
